Flying Lotus

Acrylic on Wood, 24" x 24" 2013

Flying Lotus was created while listening to one particular song in repetition again and again. The same tempo the same sound the same pitch elicits the same point of view and the same perspective to help me complete the painting is one thought from start to finish. The song that inspired this piece is Tea Leaf Dancers by Flying Lotus. the song hit me from the first moment, and the ideas and colors started flowing in my mind. It was as if I could see the music dancing as color and sound.

Music has always been a source of inspiration and fuel for my painting. I have found that certain songs illicit and almost trance-like state in which time, my worries, and the world melt away and there is nothing but me and the painting. Music is an element in my creative process and I have always experienced a physical and visual sensation complete with colors and images. Flying Lotus is a literal illustration of the song where I saw Sparks of heat coming off of the machine parts as they collided over a dark background filled with hovering flowers. The series botanica explores where man and nature collide a space in which we should share and coincide. it is a space in which man often violently imposes himself upon nature putting it into a box taming it to modern consumption. Botanica explores this line.
